In 1981 Steven Spielberg sets collaboration with George Lucas in order to create one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood, a series of action and adventure movies. Their hero is Indiana Jones, the most famous archeologist in the history of movies. The first episode of the series is called Riders Of The Lost Ark, a movie inspired by the books of adventure and also by the James Bond series, a story built around Indiana, Harrison Ford. He is hired by the United States Government and sent to find the legendary Ark of the Covenant that was supposed to hold the 10 commandments, given by god to Moses. But a hero is not complete without the opposite force that is apparently more powerful. This time, the dark forces are the Gestapo agents, in search for the same priceless artifact. An incredible chase across half Asia starts between the two sides, a situation that will leave Indiana Jones almost no escape.
The movie is a must for both action and adventure lovers, mostly because it is directed by Spielberg and also because it won 4 Oscars: for directing, special effects, soundtrack and best movie edition.

7. The Matrix

The Matrix, launched in 1999, is considered to be a huge leap in cinematography; its creators have crossed a barrier combining amazing effects transferred from different fields, with a set of great characters and a story like a mish – mash of philosophy, religion, IT subculture and cyberpunk, all together in a distinctive and complex sci-fi world. A movie that has gathered many Oscars, for editing, sound and effects.
We talk about two different worlds: a real one and a world of illusions, two parallel worlds; one is the one we live in; the other is that of the naked truth. Neo lives inside the world of illusions without any knowledge about the truth behind them. He is the chosen One, the only human capable of fighting to free humans from the prison of lies they live in; he is the only one able to defeat and destroy once and for all the oppressive system, that held all humans ignorant.

6. Speed

An extremely alert action movie that keeps us viewers in constant alert from the beginning till the end. A sort of debut movie for the becoming star, Sandra Bullock, in the role of the brave woman that dares to drive a bus with a bomb in it. I am sure that, along the way, there were written much better scripts but none as alert as that of Speed. The movie has a poor story, I admit, but the movie is pretty much captivating, even now, after 16 years from launching.
The story: A maniac sets a bomb in a bus. Jack, a Special Forces policeman, is also inside the bus. In order to stop the detonator, the bus must not be stopped and even more, it must run with constant speed on the streets of a very busy city. Fortunately, a young passenger has the strength and power to drive the speedy bus.

5. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back

The Star Wars collection is not quite exactly a typical action movie. Probably, it would fit better in a sci-fi top. Nevertheless, the second episode of the series The Empire Strikes Back, couldn’t be missing out from this article, for various reasons. On one hand, this episode is darker and more ambiguous morally speaking, compared with the others, and on the other hand, we have many action scenes, like that on planet Hoth, or at the end, that of the confrontation between Luke and Vader, the good and the evil.
The story: after the first part when the Empire was defeated, Vader’s men prepare a new offensive under the command of their leader. On a tropical planet, Dagobah, Luke will meet master Yoda, the only one able to teach him how to defeat Vader. Nothings is as simple as it looks, the road to victory is going to be extremely hard and full of dangers.

4. Lethal Weapon

Lethal weapon is the first episode of the series with the same name, a series that made Mel Gibson famous, and also the most successful one, with many box office records at the time. It became one of the most appreciated and watched action – thriller.
The main characters are: Roger Murtaugh an almost retired police man, a family man; his only concern is to safely get through his last days of work. Then, we have Martin Riggs, another policeman. He is rebel, suicidal and has no respect for anything. Their job is to discover the mystery behind the murder of a girl, a banker’s daughter. As intrigues develop, their mission will become personal and the two will have to learn to respect each other and to earn each other’s respect, in order to destroy a very dangerous criminal organization, deeply anchored into the society they live in.

3. Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The first movie in the Terminator series made a star out of Arnold. The subject we want to talk about is the second episode, Judgment Day, one of the most interesting and thrilling movies in James Cameron’s trilogy. Action, special effects that impress even today, they all are the ingredients of a complex and complete movie. The movie has gathered 4 Oscars, for sound, visual effects, make-up and other 2 nominees, best editing and best cinematography.
The story begins after 10 years from the events in the first episode, when Sarah Connor was the living target of a terminator coming from the future. This time, the target is her son, the future leader of human resistance, for this reason this terminator is much more powerful and dangerous. But, John will be protected by something send by him, back in time, to save his own life.

2. Aliens

Continuing the Alien franchise, after Ridley Scott, James Cameron takes his chance with this sequel, launched after 7 years from the original movie. A well rewarded effort, because Aliens managed to gather 2 Oscars for best sound effects and visual effects and another 5 nominees, like that for best actress that actually slipped through Sigourney fingers. The result was, one of the best movies in Alien series.

Ripley, the only survivor of the alien attack on the space ship Nostromo, in the first episode, is saved after 57 years, while she was floating in space in her shuttle. She is not considered very trust worthy and her story is regarded as a joke. Things change when the crew start loosing contact with the colonists send on the alien planet. Well, it’s easy to imagine what will happen next…

1. Die Hard

Even though, it only gathered 4 Oscar nominees, Die Hard is one of the best action movies, a representative of the kind. John McTiernan’s formula is a model for the following years, for many other popular action movies. The idea is simple: a group of terrorists take hostages, inside a building, having a lot of claims. In the mean time, somebody (preferable a policeman), gets caught in the building and using his brain he will eliminate the terrorists one by one. This time, this person is John McClane (Bruce Willis), a New York cop. His family is also inside the building. This movie made Bruce and Bruce made this movie. The manner in which Bruce understood the role of an action hero is pretty remarkable, John McClane being on of the most charismatic and amusing action heroes, a model to follow for the next 20 years of Hollywood productions.

8.  Unforgiven (1992)

After only one year from Dances With The Wolves, westerns have seemed to become popular again.  This was true, but only due to the magical contribution of Clint Eastwood, one of these movies greatest performers, now also a director. He delivers the realistic, brutal, violent modern western. In Unvorgiven, the gun fights become realistic, the bullets open bloody wounds and the hero is much more human, good and evil are not separated, they merge inside their personality.

Plot: after a violent attack on a prostitute, her colleagues are willing to offer a great amount of money to those that capture and kill the attackers. William Munny, a retired “bad boy” and his friend Ned, start looking for the attackers, with the intention of getting the promised reward.

7. Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

Another classic,  Once Upon a Time in the West (C’era una volta il West) with an impressive cast Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Charles Bronson, directed by an artist of western movies Sergio Leone.

Plot: A young widow (Claudia Cardinale) seeks revenge after her family gets killed during a fight at the railway. One of the suspects is Cheyenne (Robards), a great coffee drinker, apparently a friend of the widow, but also willing to start looking for the assassins. A weird stranger will join him, a harmonica player, performed by the great Charles Bronson.

6. The Good the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Also directed by the same Sergio Leone, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo) it is still considered “the most epic western” in the history o movies. On the other hand it is probably, the most important western performed by Clint Eastwood and probably the most ambitious project of the director. In the center of the story we have two bad boys Blondie and Tuco who start searching for a buried treasure of over 200.000 dollars. Each one wants the treasure for himself, so the two will constantly fight during the movie. Than, another interested person gets in the way, Angel Eyes also a great gunner.
A must in any private DVD collection (if you can find it), this movie is not recommended, though, in my opinion to teenagers, not before they get accustomed with this kind of movies; they will easily get bored.

5. No Country for Old Men (2007)

Texas, modern times. Nothing has changed from western times except vehicles and the villains’ profile that have passed from dollars, gold and cattle to drug dealing. The dealers love each other so much and, most of the times, the business meetings end up in blood. Llewelyn Moss, a local hunter, witnesses one of these scenes.  Llewelyn gets fast out of the shock after finding a bag full of money, left behind after the fight. He succeeds barely to get out of an ambush, leaving his car behind. The sheriff discovers the next day the crimes and the hunter’s car and he starts the search for the criminals. On the other hand, a notorious criminal is on his way after Llewelyn, and, obviously, after the bag full of money. Caught on the middle, Llewelyn tries to escape, but, as the story goes on, we will witness, helplessly, how he makes the worst decisions of his life.

4. The Magnificent Seven (1960)

The Magnificent Seven is one of the oldest movies in this article containing movies from the last 50 years, but it is for sure, one of the best. The story brings us to the South, in a small Mexican town, annually terrorized by a gang of criminals lead by senor Calvera. The old people of the village gather one day, after one of gang’s robberies, and decide to hire a similar gang to protect them. They find a group of 7 brave gunners that will help them get on with their plan, protecting the small town, sending the villains away forever. If you did not know, the movie is a remake of the famous The Seven Samurai of  Kurosawa; the remake will stand up in front of the original, over passing it, here and there, probably because of its 5 starts cast: each actor fits so well his role.

3. 3:10 To Yuma (2007)

Having a remarkable cast,  3.10 to Yuma couldn’t  be a fail even if it’s just a remake. Ch. Bale performance is one of the greatest, always convincing, impeccable and so natural, he deserves all the money. The story is not bad at all; it is also true that it’s full of western movies clichés, desperately searching for heroes in a pretty dark period in the USA history.
Plot: a farmer, haunted by creditors, a war veteran, with a family to support takes a job for 200 dollars. The task is relatively simple: to escort a bandit to the train that will take him to Yuma prison. The problems will come when the bandit’s gang made out of 7 gunners, decide to do anything to free their leader.

The farmer, will fulfill his job, with the price of his life, earning the bandit’s respect, whom will kill his own gang and will get, also on his own, to the train that will take him to prison.

2. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

This is a movie that exploits to the maximum the 60’s trend towards freedom and emancipation, enhancing the life of the most notorious and legendary robbers of the wild west, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid and their gangs of professionals who have spread terror and fear among the bankers. The thieves are depicted as mannered and “human” heroes; the viewers ignore their negative side, seduced by their charisma. This is an appreciated “deviation” from the classical western hero, in the service of law and humankind etc.

Plot: the famous Butch and Sundance decide that they need a change, and they start robbing trains. The results are not satisfactory, plus the two seem to be followed by the authorities. They go to Bolivia and they start all over again, robbing the local banks. It is just a matter of time before they get caught. Dead or alive.

1. Dances With The Wolves (1990)

As I said before, Dances With The Wolves revives, in a certain way, the western movies. It is one of the best and most courageous movies about the Wild West.
Once again, we talk about the proud metamorphosis of the American classical hero. The main character, Costner passes from the side of the “civilization” to that of the “savages” . The change is major, because most of the western movies depict Indians as savages, blood thirsty, uncivilized and all against the “American dream”.

Plot: set to defend the frontier, Lieutenant Dunbar (Costner) receives, frequently, visits from an Indian tribe. He becomes friends with them and joins them. Shortly, the frontier will disappear and the lieutenant gets caught in the middle, between his friends an his duty, the republican army. He will have to take a decision fast about the sides he will have to take.

Costner’s performance is notable. He fits the role perfectly. A good movie for 2010 as it was for 1990, when it won 7 Oscars.

He’s tried a come back, over the last few years, but the success has been delayed; the only information about him was given through the tabloids. He remains, though, one of the most talented and famous children actors in Hollywood.

5. Final Destination (2000)

This successful movie has created many sequels, none of them reached the popularity of the first movie, as script, directing and also mystery, innovation. The movie has gathered at the time so many fans across the world.
The story begins with a trip. Some friends plan a trip. They begin their journey in a plane to Paris. One of them has a premonition with the plane crashing and somehow gets her friends out of the plane. The premonition will prove to be right and all the saved ones will be so relived after realizing that there were no survivors. What they don’t know yet is that Death is after them, with the intention to settle things right after the disorder created by the premonition; she starts to collect the trophies. All friends will die, one by one, in a series of bizarre and terrifying accidents, following the order they were supposed to die during the plane crash.   They try to find an escape, but Death will take them one by one, proving that you can not defy it too many times.

Virgin Suicides is a pretty disturbing movie, full of drama, based on an also dramatic novel with the same title. The main characters are the Lisbon sisters, three young girls, full of potential that will kill themselves, one by one, in the most unusual and disturbing ways.  Isolated and controlled by their over protecting parents after one of their daughters killed herself, the sisters live silently with no hope for future. These are only some of the elements that will lead to a huge tragedy, nobody being able to stop the suicides. The story is depicted by some of the sisters’ friends.

3. The Butterfly Effect (2004)

Evan Treborn grew up in a small town, together with his single mother and friends. He suffers from a weird disease suffering from memory loses, visions and feints, waking up confused, in weird places. Nobody believes him, not even his friends, who think he lies just to get out of unpleasant situations caused by his uncontrollable reactions. As he grows up, the attacks seem to pass. But, from the age of 7 Evan has been keeping a diary of his visions and weird moments, in order to always remember them. One day, reading the diary, Evan discovers the shocking truth…

2. Carrie (1976)

A classical thriller after a novel by Stephen King, a dramatic story of a teenager. Carrie White, not a very popular girl, lives with a very religious mother, who forbids her any contact with strangers, obsessed with the Bible. She is interpreting the Bible in her own way, trapping her daughter into a no escape prison.
Her fanatic behavior has no limits, the communication with her daughter being practically reduced to none. Carrie has her first period in the schools showers, very scared, she does not understand what she is going through… the other girls tease her. The sports teacher will punish the girls, but one of them understands the problem and gets very embarrassed because of the situation. In order to get rid of the guilt asks her boyfriend to take Carrie to the pram.

Another girl who was forbidden to participate to the pram has no compassion for Carrie and sets up a diabolic plan, together with her boyfriend, just to humiliate her once again. Her plan succeeds, Carrie’s humiliation is overwhelming and the conclusion will be very unexpected; all students will have an unforgettable pram night.

8. Road Trip (2000)

Plot: four friends start a road trip for 1800 miles to get the compromising video tape sent to one of the boys’ girlfriend.

Josh and Tiffany are together since childhood. Unfortunately, they are separated by a considerable distance, studying in different colleges. We have Beth, a sexy blonde in the same college as Josh. One night, the two get together taping their affair. The second day, Josh sends by mistake the video tape to his girlfriend, mistaken it for an old one, with a special message for her. Guilty as charged, Josh has no alternative but to follow the tape, together with some friends.

A movie with teenagers that will amuse you almost constantly and you will appreciate it for sure.

7. Cry Baby (1990)

A classic teen movie, Cry Baby tells the story of a common boy who falls in love with a rich girl. His feelings are mutual, but her family does not accept by all means this relationship. In a rock’n roll ambient and with a a rock’n roll  soundtrack, Cry Baby can be described as a modern mix between the story of  Romeo and Juliet and Grease, one of the most popular musicals inspired by the life of American teenagers. The main character is performed by  Jonny Depp,  27 at the time.

6. American Pie (1999)

American Pie is the comedy that gathers the most numerous clichés related to the American teenagers. Among them, the most frequently used in teenager movies are sex and popularity. Jim, Oz, Finch and Kevin are 4 friends that set together a common goal: they have to loose their virginity before high school graduation.
The hardest part is to fulfill the agreement, before pram night. They all see world in different ways and they act differently. Oz starts singing to get attention, Kevin tries to convince his girlfriend, Jim spreads rumors and Jim fails from the start. Caught in embarrassing situations, each one of them will end up with a very precious advice from their father.

Will they succeed till the ‘infamous” night or will they learn something much more different from this experience?

5. The Girl Next Door (2004)

The Girl Next Door is the story of an ambitious and intelligent young man, living an ordinary life, with no events, no sentimental affairs, his only goal being to be accepted to Georgetown University, the first step in his dream to become a president. When he gets accepted, he feels incomplete and craves for life experiences that he never had and his friends always had. Everything changes when the girl of his dreams moves across the road.
From the beginning, the young man is charmed by her beauty. He gets to meet her, get friends with her and then fall in love. She feels the same, but she also hides a secret that will jeopardize their relation that seemed to be perfect.

4. Grease (1978)

Another classic movie in this chapter is Grease, the inspiration for many comedies to come, in the following decades. A charming musical with Travolta in his golden days, an excellent dancer. The story is built around the lives of teenagers in the late 50’s, the first American rebel generation (rock n roll). A love story, with a lot of humor and music, between Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, two extremely different teenagers, that try everything to be together. A movie that has delighted some teen generations and not only them, that must not be missed, in case you did not see it.

3. She’s the Man (2006)

Viola Hastings’s dream is to play football. To her disappointment, the feminine football classes are cancelled in her school, and every time she tries to get into the boys team, she is refused for being a girl. When Viola finds out that her twin brother Sebastian will go to London, she is taking his place, trying to enter the football team in his school. Things get complicated because in the new school, she falls in love with her room mate. He thinks she is a he and also her friend that falls in love with Sebastian, thinks also the same. Even more, when the real Sebastian gets back from London before she anticipated, the sand castle she’s built starts to crumble.

2. Euro Trip (2004)

Scotty spends his time online, talking with a friend from Germany. When she suggests that they should meet, the young man gets scared. He will get over it, when he will find out that the girl is hot and, immediately after graduation, he leaves for Europe together with some friends, to meet her. The movie presents the adventures of these friends, as they voyage from a place to another of Europe, in a series of stupid and funny adventures.
A movie that must be seen together will friends, that will keep you permanently connected and almost continuously laughing …Don’t miss it !

1. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

10 Things I Hate About You is a delightful comedy adapted after a classical story of W. Shakespeare, “The Taming of the Shrew”. The main character of the story is Cameron, new student in Padua High. Here he meets Bianca Stratford, a young popular girl. He dreams about her, but he stands no chance, even though he will become her friend. He finds out that she is not allowed to go out only together with her sister, a feminist rock chick, with an attitude that keeps men away having no interest in attracting them. In order to get out with Bianca, Cameron enters into a hallucinating game, conceiving a plan to find the rebel sister Katarina, a boyfriend. Obviously, the plan will work to a point, but, Cameron will have a lot to handle not only with the two girls.
The result ? “10 things I hate about you” is one of the best and extremely amusing teenagers movies, a brilliant comedy. You will get the chance to see late Heath Ledger, in one of his first important roles.

8. The Usual Suspects (1995)

The “bad boy” is infamous Keyser Soze, one of the most evil men on the planet, guilty for numerous crimes, including innocent children. Only the sound of his name brings fear even among the most experienced villains. Caught by the police, disguised in a one legged old man, Verbal Kint, he succeeds in getting out through the front door, saying to special agent Kujan: “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist”.

7. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

Even though the main character of the story is a “bad boy” send to a mental institution, not because he was giving hugs and sweets to everybody, the true evil in the story is the medical nurse. Ratched actually administrates the institution, managing patients with an iron hand. Even though there, people are sick or not able to defend themselves, Ratched treats them bad, with no compassion, spreading terror each time she gets the chance.  McMurphy will try very hard to help the others and unify them against the nurse. At one point he will set free a patient, but, Ratched will regain control over the institution.

6. Memento (2000)

Leonard Shelby, is the main character of Memento, a collection movie, that must not be absent from any respected collection. Lonard is suffering from a disease that does not allow him to have new memories. He tries to turn this disease on his favor, searching revenge for his murdered wife. With the purpose of destroying the person who thinks is responsible for his wife’s death, he conceives a very sophisticated plan to frame his friend, Teddy. He is aware that he will soon forget about the deed and that he has convicted an innocent man, but he does not care and goes on with the plan.

5. Hannibal (2001)

The second part of the trilogy constructed around the infamous cannibal criminal Lecter, brilliantly performed by sir Hopkins, projects us in the future, after 10 years from the events in the first movie, when the doctor was hiding from the authorities. After he eats some peaces of  Paul Krendler ‘s brain, inviting him also to eat, Hannibal is caught by the authorities. He manages to escape loosing one arm. The last images show him in a plane while offering some peaces of cooked brain to a child.

4. Primal Fear (1996)

The bad boy in this movie is Aaron Stampler, an apparently shy, frustrated young man, accused for the murder of an archbishop. Also apparently, he suffers of multiple personality syndrome, stress revealing aggressive Roy.
Caught and brought to justice, Roy appears during the trial, convincing the judge and the jury to send him to a mental institution. Here Aaron manages to escape pretty fast.
All this time, Aaron/Roy deceived everybody. The only one who really sees that is his lawyer Martin Vail.

3. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

A classic story revived by Soderbergh, with a great cast, Ocean’s Eleven  can be considered to be one of the best movies at the beginning of the 21^st Century. It is the story of a team of professional thieves made by 11 men and a huge rubbery that will bring them over 150 million dollars. The idea is simple: the simultaneous attack on 3 casinos, during a boxing match. beyond the actors’ excellent performances, Ocean’s Eleven reminds us of the bank robberies movies golden age, during the 6^th and 7^th decades of the last century,, a period that depicted a lot of negative characters as being positive, dethroning the old specific characters of the western civilization.

The end of the movie will bring the thieves the money they’ve wanted. Even if in this movie, the thieves are positive characters, in any other movie they would be considered bad, so, they qualify for this article.

2. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Obviously, at the end of the trilogy that has till now, 6 episodes, the good guys will win, as usual, in any story made up by human kind. But, in the 5^th episode The Empire Strikes Back,  has another end. The negative characters are both emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, but also the whole Galactic Empire. This episode will end when Vader cuts down Luke’s hand and Han Solo, frozen, is brought by Jabba the hut to a an award gatherer, Boba Fett.

1. Se7en (1995)

In a sad, unreal world, we have a series killer with a diabolical plan and 2 cops led by different purposes. One is young, the other is near retirement, dull, making a lot of mistakes.

The bad guy here is obviously the serial killer, a no name individual, that fulfills his plan to kill almost anything. At the end, after killing people guilty of committing 5 of the 7 sins, the criminal offers the detective his wife’s head, guilty of envy. Even though he is conscious that killing the criminal would be the last peace in his plan, the detective follows the criminal’s will, killing him.

Consequently, even if the bad guy dies, he dies winning.

8. Troy (2004)

One of the most popular stories of the Greek mythology, the story of Achilles the hero and the Trojan War could not be forgotten by all means, by the American movie industry. It is a mega-production with a strong cast. The only one that seems an outsider is the leading actor of the movie and of this article, Brad Pitt. I would have never imagined Achilles blonde, southern and superficial, the first impression you get from the actor. Even so, the role of Troy is one of the best of his career.
For those who did not know, Achilles is a Greek hero, an almost invincible warrior, with only one week point, that, in time will kill him. The conflict between Greeks and Trojans has started because of a woman (as many conflicts between men who can’t see very much beyond, getting all fired up at a lady’s glance). She is Helen, wife of Menelaus; she has also a secret affair with Paris, the Trojan price. When he kidnaps her, Menelaus gets very offended and together with his bother Agamemnon, king of Miocene, declares war to Troy and to its king Priam.
In stead of giving a harsh treatment to his son, king Priam accepts war with pride and initially seems to face the Greek army pretty well. This until, the sharp minded Greeks, set an ingenious plan and succeed in conquering the citadel. The key to the victory or the key to fail is held by Achilles. His own drama merges with the historical facts.

7. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Tarantino accustomed us with pretty special movies, ignoring, most of the time, physical relations and historical facts. Inglorious Basterds respects the same pattern, even though, at a closer look, the movie seems to be more of a disappointment compared with the rest of his work. It is not one of Brad Pitt’s best roles, but for sure, one of the best movies he was in; this is firstly due to Christoph Waltz, the actor who has won the Oscar for supporting role in this movie.
The story is developed on two distinctive levels. On one hand, we have colonel Aldo Raine (Pitt) and his gang of revenging Jews, one the other hand Shosanna, a young Jew who has witnessed the massacre of her family by Nazis led by colonel Landa. They all have the same purpose, that of revenge, of assassinating the German Nazi elite, including Adolf Hitler. They will all be, in the same time at the same place in a cinema theatre, where Germans have planned a great celebration.

6. Meet Joe Black (1998)

I admit. The first time I saw this movie , knowing nothing about the plot or the characters, surprised to see that after the first 5 minutes Brad Pitt’s character dies, I raved: OMG, this must be the best Brad Pitt movie!! I was wrong, because the main character was not that young man killed by a car, but Joe Black, a messenger send by Death itself, to prepare its visit, a messenger that will take the car crash victim’s body. Obviously, the messenger will appear at the mansion of a very wealthy man, the owner of a multimedia empire, William Parrish (Hopkins). His only reasons for living are money and his daughters. For sure, Death knows a lot about money, but women…. Joe Black will also discover this, on his own, in an otherworldly romance with one of old man’s daughters.

4. Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

A “Goth” classic, adapted after a novel, not as good as many European novels, but by far a masterpiece compared to the latest writings about vampires and werewolves. Two characters, very well depicted, Louis and Lestat, two vampires, very different to one another, due to their character and history, are joined by young Claudia (Kirsten Dunst), an innocent girl at first, a ferocious and heartless beast to be.
Lestat created both Louis and Claudia. From the beginning the differences between the three are obvious, but, for a period of time they manage to stay together. It is just a matter of time, until Louis and Claudia will separate from Lestat, both trying to get rid of him, united by the same purpose not by same ideals, Louis refusing to embrace his new nature, of terror and darkness.

3. Fight Club (1999)

Fight Club is the story of a young man with no hopes, living a dull life until a mysterious man enters his life. He will teach him how to fight, giving him new meanings for life. They will discover violence together, in a fight club. A new concept, successfully implemented, this kind of clubs became very popular under the big cities. The intrigue will be represented by a woman that will mess all their plans, bringing chaos to their lives.

The nameless narrator (Norton) is a traveling automobile company employee who suffers from insomnia. His doctor refuses to give him medication and advises him to visit a support group to witness more severe suffering. The narrator attends a support group for testicular cancer victims and, after fooling them into thinking that he is a fellow victim, finds an emotional release that relieves his insomnia. He becomes addicted to attending support groups and pretending to be a victim, but the presence of another impostor—Marla Singer (Bonham Carter)—disturbs him, so he negotiates with her to avoid their meeting at the same groups. 2. Snatch. (2000)

A vicious and dangerous world of modern time London, its muddy suburbs, the mafia, hunger for money, illegal boxing matches. These are the ingredients of a successful movie that made Jason Statham famous and recreated Brad Pitt. The actor will fit surprisingly well and extremely authentically into his character, a local gipsy, Mickey, the best and most complete role of the actor, in my opinion. The gipsy is convinced by the mobsters to fight for them in illegal boxing matches, previously settled. He refuses to give up, panicking the gamblers.
On the other hand we have the story of a diamonds thief on his way to New York. His stop in London will turn out fatal. Allured by Boris, a local mobster, he will loose everything gambling.

The serial killer acts almost impeccable, he is almost impossible to get through , the only clues he leaves are his victims. He is not choosing chaotically, he follows a pattern, inspired by the seven deathly sins, punishing sinners, condemning them to death. The two detectives will try to enter the criminal’s mind, will try to understand hid thoughts, to anticipate his moves, but they will end up caught in his game with no escape or chance to solve the hardest case of their career.
A very dark movie, dramatic and breath taking. The only light is brought by Tracy, the wife of the young detective performed by Gwyneth Paltrow.

8. Ghostface.

The Scream 1,2,3, Scary Movie

With a mask inspired by the famous work of the Norwegian expressionist painter  Edward Munch, “The Scream”, Ghostface is a horror character played by 5 different actors during 3 big screen movies. Also, Ghostface has made history being included in the script of the parody series Scary Movie. For this reason we have him on our list, even if on the last 8^th place.

Ghostface usually contacts his victims on the phone , harassing them and threatening them before chopping them with a 30 cm long knife. Totally, during the three movies Ghostface kills 22 people, an impressive number for a respected serial killer.

7. Michael Myers.

Halloween

Mr. Myers is a psycho-killer who has killed his sister when he was a little boy and after 15 years spent in a mental institution, comes back among the living, killing them on Halloween. The original movie was launched in 1978, having a great success, leading to 7 sequels that make Michael one of the most important characters of the kind. Also, a remake of the original movie was made by Rob Zombie, leading also to a sequel.
Along the years, Michael Myers was depicted by a series of actors:  Nick Castle, Tony Moran, Will Sandin, Dick Warlock, George P. Wilbur, Don Shanks, Chris Durand, Brad Loree, Tyler Mane, Daeg Faerch,Chase Wright Vanek.

6. Chucky.

Child’s Play 1,2,3, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky

Those over 30 will remember surely the famous series Child’s Play and Chucky.
followed by detective Mike Morris, a serial killer and a voodoo practicing killer named  Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray (“The Lakeshore Strangler”) (Brad Dourif), is shut and deadly wounded. Before his last breath, Ray finds shelter in a toy shop where, by a voodoo ritual transfers his soul into a puppet. Later, the shop gets burned entirely and  Chucky is found by a homeless that sells it to Karen Barclay, who was preparing a gift for his son, on his birthday.
Chucky will appear in leading role in 5 different movies, one bloodier than the other, always evolving from horror to comedy horror and then back to horror.

5. Jigsaw Killer.

SAW

Unlike the other psychopaths included in this article, Jigsaw has not intention of murdering, at first. His philosophy is much more complex, he is trying to rediscover human primary instincts, to let them show, and testing humans’ urge to live. He kidnaps people and then he kills them. He gives, though his victims a chance to save their lives, after a long series of traumatizing tests (physically and mentally). Also, Jigsaw proves great technical abilities, inventing new instruments of torture in order to test the limits of the human being.
Even though, till now, there were made 6 movies in entitled SAW, only the first one is truly a must see of the kind, sequels loosing gradually, year by year, their quality, regarding the story, imagination and cinematic; the surprise element that stands out only in the first movie.

4. Freddy Krueger.

Nightmare on Elm Street series

Freddy Krueger is a fictional psychopath serial killer, the main character of the horror series  A Nightmare on Elm Street. His debut on the big screen is made with the movie made by Wes Craven in 1984, as a disfigured psychopath killer, following children in their dreams, while he kills them, the young dying also in reality, as a revenge against their parents that have burned him in the past. Appearing in the real world, Freddy is vulnerable, no more than a common man.
In time, Kreuger appeared in many countdowns of “evil” Wizard Magazine including him on an honorable 14^th place in a top of fictional villains, British TV Channel Sky 2 included him on 8^th place and the American Movie Institute on 40^th place out of 100.
Freddy Kreuger is played by actor Robert Englund in all the movies.

3. Jason Voorhees.

Friday the 13th

Jason Voorhees is one of the horror movies bad boys veterans. We can’t say the same thing about his victims, that come and go during 12 movies Friday the 13th.
His distinctive signs are the hokey mask and the machete, a very well handled weapon.  At one point, Jason will have an interesting confrontation with Freddy Kreuger in the movie Freddy Vs Jason, a cinematographic tribute to the two masters of crime.
Ari Lehman, Warrington Gillette, Steve Daskawisz, Richard Brooker, Ted White, Tom Morga, C. J. Graham, Kane Hodder, Ken Kirzenger, Spencer Stump, were one by one Jason Voorhees.

2. Norman Bates.

Psycho

Norman Bates is a fictional criminal created by writer Robert Bloch, as main character of his novel Psycho, like the movie launched in 1960 by Alfred Hitchcock.  Even though is a fictional criminal, Norman is inspired by real life, the inspiration source being  Ed Gein.
Gein was convicted for killing only  2 persons, but his methods and trophies like bones and skin prevailed from his victims made him an inspiration source for many serial killers that followed, both in reality and cinematography.  On the other hand, Norman Bates was also an inspiration for the following decades, the “shower” scene being considered even now, one of the best and most terrifying of the kind. The series contains 5 movies, including the useless remake of the original, made in  1998.

1. Hannibal Lecter.

Silence of the lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal

Hannibal Lecter is one of the most sadistic and cerebral serial killers on the screen, a brilliant psychiatrist with cannibalistic tendencies. Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal), a charismatic and great actor.

Hannibal Lecter was voted by the American Institute as the most memorable “bad boy” in the movies history.
In 2007, when the 4^th movie of the series was launched, we found out about the story of his youth and the situations that made him blood thirsty. The movie was called Hannibal Rising, the criminal’s role was played by actor Gaspard Ulliel.

Will Smith – Neo, The Matrix

I really don’t know how you imagine Smithy , but I just can not imagine him in Matrix. Ok… Hancock, I agree, but NEO? Besides, Will himself declared that he’s turned down this role because he would mock the movie, considering himself not such a smart actor like Keanu Reeves. Luckily he mentioned “as actor”, otherwise we would have wondered about his intellectual capacity. Anyway, it would have been interesting to see  NEO rapping. As an extra curiosity even Evan McGregor refused this role. Probably he considered that he will not be able to handle well a role that does not expose his ass.

Cary Grant – James Bond

In case you didn’t know, the producers of the James Bond series, initially considered  Cary Grant as agent 007. He refused the offer politely, because he did not wish to be part of a series. So, the role was thrown to Sean Connery, who’s debut was as Dr. No in 1962, even though, the producer was not fully satisfied of the choice.
Unfortunately for him, Cary lived to see Sean in full ascension, making movie after movie, even after 20 years from the moment, the ex star left the scene for good.

Sean Connery – Gandalf, Lord of the Rings

Strangely enough, Sean Connery refused the role of Gandalf – the wizard in the movie made after J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The reason was a very honest one: the long period of filming, approximately 18 months. At his age and his career, we understand him. Anyway, Sir Ian McKellan handled very well the tasks imposed by the producers.

Daryl Hannah – Vivian, Pretty Woman

Daryl Hannah was the first to refuse the role of  Vivian in Pretty Woman, considering it as defamatory for her, as a woman. This exaggerated ethics did not stop her to play the role of a stripper in Dancing at the Blue Iguana. After that, Molly Ringwald refused the same role and Pretty Woman became Julia Roberts, the lucky owner of an oral cavity that can not be considered to be defamatory for a talented prostitute.

Al Pacino – Han Solo, Star Wars

Al Pacino, Nick Nolte and Christopher Walken were all the Han Solo wannabes in Star Wars Trilogy. Happily, for all fans, the role of the adventurer was played by another Hollywood adventurer, Harrison Ford. With all do respect for Al Pacino, we are all very glad he did not accept this role.

Bruce Willis – Sam Wheat, Ghost

Bruce Willis turned down the role of the ghost in  The Ghost, considering also that this would have destroyed his career. This kind of role, on the other hand, did  not bother him when he filmed The Sixth Sense, with no kind of remorse.

Kevin Costner – Bill, Kill Bill

Kevin Costner turned down a role that would have made him big again, that of Bill in Tarantino story, Kill Bill. He managed, though to end his career, fighting for his honor in Water World.
